No
matter how much insurance you carry, no insurance policy
can adequately compensate you for all your pain, trauma
and inconvenience following a fire or theft. Consider
the following to minimize the chance of a loss:
· Install appropriate
smoke detector(s). These can give you early notice of
a fire and may save your life. Cost is minimal, and
many municipalities require smoke detectors in homes.
· Practice home
fire drills. This will let your entire family, particularly
your children, know what to do if a fire should occur.
· Lock up all firearms
in a gun safe.
· Make sure gasoline
and other flammable liquids are stored in approved containers.
· Consider upgrading
your electrical panel of your house is more than 25
years old. You should have at least a 100 amp main service;
200 amps are common with newer construction.
· Take an inventory
of your personal possessions. This may include photographs
or a videotape of your furniture and belongings, as
well as a written list of your home's contents and their
purchase price. The inventory should be kept in a safe
place, such as a safety deposit box. In the event of
a fire or theft, such documentation will be very beneficial
in filing your claim.
