Small
details, such as the number of outlets, switches, phone
jacks, cable and computer connections, and where they
are located, make a big difference in how comfortable
you will be in your new home.
Consider
your current lifestyle habits and convenience when looking
at prints. It's important for both spouses to examine
and agree on the blueprints. Men and women usually perform
different tasks at home and have different perspectives
on what makes a space convenient and comfortable. It
is much, much cheaper to have switches, jacks, lighting
and layouts changed before work is completed.
ELECTRICAL:
Are there switches for room lights and hallways at every
entrance door? Does the room have a split outlet - upper
outlet switched, lower outlet always on? Is there a
switch in the hallway near the master bedroom ? Can
you turn on interior lights from the garage entrance?
Do you need more outlets than you have in your existing
home? Where should the additional outlets be located?
If there is an island in the kitchen, is there adequate
lighting near or above it? Is there more than one kind
of lighting in the kitchen to cover all work areas?
Are there outlets on any kitchen islands?
TELEPHONE
JACKS:
Is there a phone jack in every room? Are there any rooms
which need multiple phone jacks?
WHERE
ARE THE OUTLETS?
Are there convenient outlet(s) in every room, including
the hallway(s), for vacuuming? Are the outlets properly
placed in the bathroom for blow-dryers and razors? Are
the outlets conveniently placed for small kitchen appliances?
Is there an outlet on each bedroom wall for easy lamp
placement?
IS THE KITCHEN LAYOUT PRACTICAL?
Is there a work triangle in the kitchen? Are you always
walking around cabinets to access the kitchen table?
Is the refrigerator located close to the main cooking
surface and primary food preparation area?
ARE
THE PLUMBING PIPES CONVENIENTLY LOCATED?
Are the plumbing pipes located for easy repair access,
if necessary? Are the pipes located on the wall closest
to the earliest riser in the household?
WHAT
ARE THE SMALL DETAILS OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE?
Would pocket doors or doors that swing out be better
for your closets? Do you prefer a walk-in closet or
a double closet in the master bedroom? Single or double
closet in other bedrooms?
